This is all well and good if the document is going right onto your blog or will be living on your computer. You hit control-B while typing and boom! Your text is now bold. It’s quite literally called a What You See is What You Get (WYSIWYG) editor. The same approach can be found in blog and website back ends, like the standard Wordpress editor. Anything you type will be on the final copy.

Someone else decided how to put it into the final published format. The author could have provided the written text as a Word document, a Google Doc, a PDF, or even a hard copy from a typewriter. You know that when you read a magazine article or novel, it was arranged into that final format by designers and printers. The way it is written is the written format. The way a finished document looks is the published format. This enables the writer to handle all formatting without breaking stride while typing - not even moving the hand up to hit the control key. To understand why Markdown works, we need change how we think about formatting. It is a way of formatting rich text by only using plain text symbols.
